Tauchen vom Feinsten

Die Spirit of Freedom is ein sehr elegantes Schiff. Dieses hervorragende Tauchschiff bietet seit 2002 relmässige Tripps aus Cairns in die Coral Sea und zu den Ribbon Reefs an.
Ein Flug zwischen Cairns und Lizard Island mit fantastischer Aussicht auf das Barrier Reef ist Teil der Exkursionen.
Das Schiff hat NITROX an Bord und ist auch sonst bestens ausgerüstet für Taucher. Spirit of Freedom, nimmt maximal 26 Gäste mit. Die Kabinen sind angenehm gross und auch das Tauchdeck bietet viel Platz für alle Taucher.

Die "Spirit of Freedom"

An Platz mangelt es nicht auf der 37 Meter langen Spirit of Freedom. Sie hat einen riesigen Salon, wie man es eigentlich fast nur von luxuriösen Kreuzfahrtschiffen kennt. Alles auf dem Schiff ist mit wunderschönem Holz ausgestattet.

Spirit of Freedom ist voll klimatisiert, die Klimaanlagen in jeder Kabine sind individuell einstellbar.
Das überdachte Sonnendeck biete Platz um wunderbar zwischen den Tauchgängen zu relaxen. Das Tauchdeck ist mit allem ausgestattet was man so braucht, auch mit genügend Platz für Kameras. Es gibt zwei Kompressoren an Bord.
Getaucht wird meistens vom Tauchdeck. Ab und an werden auch mal die beiden Beiboote zum Tauchen eingesetzt.

Spirit of Freedom hat elektronische "Stabilisatoren". Diese reduzieren die seitlichen Schwankungen des Schiffes und somit ist Seekrankheit kaum ein Thema.

Essen wird von einem ausgebildeten Koch frisch zubereitet und ist sehr gut. Frischwasser steht Dank "Desalinator" unbegrenzt zur Verfügung.

Tauchplatzbeschreibungen (eine Auswahl)

Die 3 grossen Riffesysteme in der nördlichen Coral Sea Osprey Reef, Holmes Reef und Bougainville Reef habben alle sehr individuelle Eigenschaften:

Das Osprey Reef hat mit die besten Wände in der Coral Sea. Haifischbegegnungen bestimmt nicht auszuschliessen!

Dieses Riff steigt aus 1000 m Tiefe senkrecht bis an die Oberfläche und ist Treffpunkt für Raubfische aller Art und Größe. Haifischfreunde kommen hier auf ihre Kosten.

 Der Tauchplatz "North Horn" ist einer von Australiens besten Hai-Revieren. Hier stossen zwei Meeresströmungen aufeinander, die ekonstante Fisch-"action" garantieren. Man kann meistens 5 verschiedene Haifischarten sehen. Außerdem gibt es hier Schwärme von Barakudas und Thunfischen zu bewundern. Nachttaucher sollten auf die seltenen Blitzlichtfische (Flashlight fish) achten. Das Osprey Reef zählt zu unseren Lieblingsplätzen.

Holmes Reef ist Heimat der grösseren Fische (Haie, Maori Wrasses, Rochen, etc). Die Steilwände und Drop-Off's sind atemberaubend hier. Einer der spektakulärsten Tauchplätze ist "The Abyss", eine Riffwand die aus 1000 Meter Tiefe empor kommt. Ein Lieblingsplatz für Grossfische. Sollte man die Haie am "Abyss" verpassen, gibt es diese spätestens bei dem Tauchplatz "Predators playground", wo eine Haifütterung stattfindet.

Aber auch Tauchplätze wie "Nonki" beeindrucken schon mit ihrer Formation (wie ein Zuckerhut aus der Tiefe) und auch aufgrund der unglaublichen Artenvielfalt.

Bougainville Reef ist ca. 130 Kilometer nördlich vom Holmes Reef. Es ist wesentlich kleiner und hat nur eine beschränkte Auswahl an Ankerplätzen. Ein grosses System an Tunneln und Schluchten bieten eine einzigartige Rifftopographie. Leider ist Bougainville Reef sehr wetteranfällig und kann nur bei relativ ruhiger See angefahren werden. Natürlich fehlen die spektakuläre Drop-offs mit wunderschönen Weichkorallen und riesigen Gorgonien nicht und Hai- und Grossfischfreunde werden auch nicht zu kurz kommen!

Special note: The 7 day itinerary, Monday departure does not return to Cairns for the full 7 days. Flights are not included, and therefore there are no limitations on weight.

Sample Itinerary

Monday: Board Spirit of Freedom at 11:15am at Trinity Wharf (complimentary transfers from Cairns city hotels are available) for a 12 noon departure. Lunch will be served on board while we cruise to the Great Barrier Reef for an afternoon orientation dive and a twilight or night dive.

Tuesday: Today we may dive the amazing Steve’s Bommie, Clam gardens, Flare Point and the beautiful Gorgonia Wall and other sites on middle Ribbon Reefs.

Wednesday: This morning we will dive The Cod Hole. This is a popular dive site famous for it’s resident family of large Potato Cod, (Groper). We may also dive Dynamite Pass, Lighthouse Bommie, Challenger Bay, and Pixie Wall. This evening we overnight at Watson’s Bay on Lizard Island.

Thursday: This morning some of our guests will depart at Lizard Island and some new guests will join us. There will be time for a morning walk on the island. This afternoon we will have the opportunity for two dives at a choice of sites such as the Cod Hole, Pixie Pinnacle and Challenger Bay before departing in the evening for the Coral Sea.

Friday & Saturday: Osprey Reef. Australia’s Coral Sea reefs are renown for crystal clear water with average visibility in excess of 100 feet. Two days can be spent diving at Osprey Reef, including North Horn, well known for its shark action. You can expect to see grey whalers, silvertips, reef sharks, occasional hammerheads, schooling barracuda, trevally, and other pelagics. The landscape is amazing with sheer walls laced with gorgonians, sea whips, and bright yellow soft corals, rising from thousands of feet below.

Sunday:
Option 1: Today we return to the Ribbon Reefs # 3 to 5 to dive sites such as the sensational Steve’s Bommie, Temple of Doom, and Flare Point. On Sunday evening we will cruise overnight back to Cairns

Option 2: Weather depending we will dive Bougainville Reef, a second coral sea reef

Monday: Arrive Cairns approximately 06:30am. Breakfast will be served on board and hotel transfer will be arranged for approx 07:30am.

A $15.00 pp per trip fee (Environment Management Charge) applies to all passengers entering the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and is payable on board
Due to instability of the price of fuel a levy may be payable on board at your time of travel.   As at August 2008, the below fuel levies apply on Spirit of Freedom tours:
3 Day Tour: $60 per person
4 Day Tour: $80 per person
7 Day Tour: $100 per person
Spirit of Freedom reserve the right to increase this levy without notice, in line with world-wide fuel increases.
